Building a Pathway: Inside Maker Story Labs and Support System Institute
At Maker Story Creative, we believe healing doesn't happen in isolation — it happens in community, through creativity, and with the steady support of people who show up again and again. That belief shapes everything about how we've built our Creative Labs workshop pathway: a progression designed to meet teens where they are, and to equip the adults around them to keep meeting them there long after a workshop ends.
Here's a look at how the full pathway fits together.
Core Partnership: The 4-Week Foundation
Every Creative Labs journey starts with Core Partnership, our four-week entry point for adolescents ages 11-24.This is where trust gets built. Sessions are low-pressure and hands-on, using expressive arts — visual art, music, writing, movement — as a doorway into self-expression rather than a performance to get right.
Over four weeks, teens:
- Build comfort with creative risk-taking in a judgment-free space
- Begin naming emotions and experiences through art rather than words alone
- Form early peer connections with others who understand what hardship feels like
- Meet the facilitators and mentors who'll walk alongside them if they continue further
Core Partnership isn't about producing a masterpiece. It's about proving — session by session — that this is a safe place to be seen.
Advanced Cohort: Going Deeper
For teens ready to build on that foundation, Advanced Cohort is the next step. This is a longer-term, higher-commitment group experience that moves beyond introduction into sustained practice. Teens take on more creative ownership, dig into more complex emotional material with facilitator support, and work toward a culminating community showcase — a chance to share their work and their growth with people who care about them.
Advanced Cohort is where identity work really deepens. Teens aren't just coping through creativity anymore; they're starting to see themselves as artists, collaborators, and leaders within their peer group.
Support System Institute: Training the Adults Who Show Up
Teens don't heal in a vacuum, and neither does programming like this succeed without the adults around it — parents, mentors, teachers, youth workers — being equipped to support what's happening in the room. That's the purpose of our Support System Institute: two four-week trainings built for the caring adults in a young person's life.
Advocate 101 (4 Weeks)
Advocate 101 comes first, and it's foundational. This training is for anyone who wants to show up better for a young person navigating hardship — whether that's a parent, a volunteer, a teacher, or a community member. Over four weeks, participants learn:
- The basics of trauma-informed presence: what it looks like, and what it doesn't
- How to recognize signs of distress without over-pathologizing normal teen behavior
- How to listen and respond in ways that build trust instead of eroding it
- Practical boundaries — knowing what's theirs to hold and what needs to be handed to a professional
Advocate 101 doesn't ask participants to become therapists. It asks them to become safer, steadier people in a teen's orbit.
Skills Coach 101 (4 Weeks)
Skills Coach 101 builds directly on that foundation, for adults ready to take a more active coaching role in a teen's creative and emotional development. This training goes further into:
- Facilitating expressive arts activities with trauma-informed care
- Coaching creative skill-building without collapsing into critique or pressure
- Reinforcing the coping strategies teens are practicing in Core Partnership and Advanced Cohort
- Sustaining consistency — because for many of these teens, a coach who keeps showing up is the intervention
Together, Advocate 101 and Skills Coach 101 create a bench of trained adults who can extend the work of Creative Labs far beyond the workshop room — into homes, schools, and everyday community life.
Why the Pathway Matters
None of these four programs work in isolation. Core Partnership builds trust. Advanced Cohort deepens it into identity and craft. Advocate 101 and Skills Coach 101 make sure the adults surrounding these teens aren't just well-meaning bystanders, but trained partners in the process.
That's the whole idea behind Maker Story: creativity as a coping pathway, and community as the thing that makes it stick.
